Introduction

This position serves as the primary field forester for setting up and administering Tribal timber sales, including, but not limited to, harvest unit and road layout, timber cruising, timber sale and permit administration, and project layout and quality control for Forest Development and Silviculture projects.

Requirements

Timber Sales Forester I (TL 119):  Bachelor’s degree in Forest Engineering or Forestry or currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Forest Engineering or Forestry and has completed 140 credits or more.  Experience laying out Western Oregon/Washington timber sales, including experience in timber cruising and road design preferred. Timber Sales Forester I transitions to a Timber Sales Forester II (TL 121) upon meeting the minimum requirements of the Timber Sales Forester II position, along with satisfactory evaluations, and approval from the Natural Resources Director. Bachelor’s degree in Forest Engineering or Forestry and a minimum of two years’ of non-school experience laying out Western Oregon/Washington timber sales, including experience in timber cruising and road design – OR – an equivalent combination of education and non-school field experience. Knowledge of: Oregon Coastal timber species, cruising, scaling and grading rules and procedures, forest terminology, mapping and the use of aerial photographs. The use of hand-held data recorders and GPS units. Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, ArcGIS and timber cruising, skyline analysis and road design programs. Experience in: Cable, ground based, and aerial logging systems design for timber sales. Logging road design and layout. West-side Oregon/Washington timber cruising, including identification and assessment of tree defects & diseases. Timber sale contract administration. The use of forest inventory and surveying tools. Ability to: Ascend and descend steep slopes. Work in heavy brush, inclement weather and smoky conditions. Supervise and work well with others. Other: Be in good physical condition. Must possess a valid Oregon State driver’s license, insurance and be eligible to drive a GSA vehicle.

Duties:

Assist Assistant Tribal Forester/Forest Engineer in the preparation of timber pre-sales packages. Flag, tag and GPS harvest unit boundaries and stream buffers. Develop logging plan for harvest units, including determining setting boundaries, conducting skyline profiles and running skyline payload analyses. Survey, design and locate access roads and landing locations. Cruise timber for inventories, timber sales, right-of-way and paid permits. Assist timber sale officer in timber sale and permit administration, including performing utilization scale and falling and bucking evaluations. Provide layout and quality control for Forest Development and Silviculture projects. Inspect reforestation and plantation maintenance projects to insure compliance with silvicultural prescriptions. Perform stand examinations and stocking surveys. Monitor free use and paid permits for minor forest products and provide trespass inspection. Prepare maps, charts and other documents which provide for a permanent record of activities of the forest. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

After the six-month probation the employee will be evaluated of his/her performance and at that time, it will be, decided if the employee is entitled to a regular employee status.
